When the source is empty, should Vietnamese sports journalists stay silent or fill the gap?

I am holding an eight-section sports analysis. Every section repeats the same status: N/A, insufficient information. No player name, no tournament name, no date, no verifiable number. If this were a journalism school assignment, the teacher would ask: “What do you plan to write from this pile of N/A?” After 17 years of observing Vietnamese sports, I have an answer: write about the gap itself. Sports news does not always begin with a goal. Sometimes it begins with an unverifiable source. In the summer of 2026, stadiums were closed. There was no crowd, but the sound of the ball rolling on the grass was so clear that I could hear it through my eardrums. That report did not need to know how many kilometres a player ran. It only needed what I truly heard: breathing, footsteps, instructions from the technical bench. When the stadium is empty, the loudest applause is your own. I keep that line to remind myself that emptiness is not failure, if we know how to listen to it. The big tournament season is coming, and Vietnamese fans expect more from the national team, from clubs racing for the title, and from young talents growing up. More expectations mean more commissioned articles. Editors ask for long analyses and fresh angles. The pressure of volume weighs on writers. I understand that. I was once a young reporter who was dismissed by a coach simply because I was a woman. I did not argue. I counted every action from the replay and wrote with verified numbers. That article became my turning point. Data does not betray; we only place our trust in the wrong place. Reading an empty analysis, the first thing I do is look for its outer shell. If it is about a match, I need the competition, the venue, the referee, the scorer and the minute. If it is about a fighter, I need the weight class, the record, the finishing rate, the injury history and the real name. I once mispronounced a star player’s name on air. The audience mocked me. Instead of deleting the article, I reviewed more than twenty matches and wrote a new analysis with a correction at the top. Getting one name wrong teaches a lifelong lesson. That is why I set a rule: no source, no analysis; no date, no event; no verified data, no emotional commentary. In the ring, the referee does not let the fight start without a medical check. Sports journalism should have a similar gate. That gate has three panels: source, time, data. If one panel is missing, the fight of words should not begin. I have seen articles claiming a player made twelve sprints, with only a three-minute clip and no statistical record from any official body. When I asked where the number came from, the reporter said: “I estimated.” Estimation is dangerous. A number can make an article beautiful, but a wrong number can destroy the audience’s trust in an entire outlet. Yet I also want to challenge my own view. Emptiness should not become an excuse for delay. Some young reporters refuse to write because they fear mistakes. I do not agree. Emptiness needs to be classified: is it empty because we have not collected the data, or empty because the source does not exist? If it is the first, go to the stadium, watch the tape, call the club, count the passes yourself. I once wrote about a young winger because I counted seven successful dribbles from the footage. No one commissioned it. There was no software, only the decision to start with observation instead of emotion. If the data remains empty after collection, then publishing a 1,423-word article is irresponsible. Length cannot save an empty content. A 200-word article with the correct name, correct number and correct source is worth more than a long article built on invented figures. Football is not a game; it is a mirror of a whole culture. When we tolerate fake news, misspelled names and unverified numbers, we teach the audience to accept lies. Only by facing the light can you see clearly; that is when you are standing in the right position. I do not know what match, athlete or tournament the original article wanted to discuss. I only know that the right thing to do now is to refuse to fill the gap with words. The reader may want a long story. Instead, I offer a short one: a blank analysis made me stop, and that was the moment I understood why sports journalism needs people who know how to stay silent at the right time.
