Milton Keynes women's charity table tennis event raises £650 and collects more than 100 bras

The second annual women's charity table tennis event at Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre took place on 6 September. The tournament is not part of an international points system and offers no major prize money, yet it raised £650 for Breast Cancer Now and collected more than 100 bras for recycling. More significantly, that total came from 14 women, most of them familiar attendees of the centre's monthly ladies-only table tennis sessions. Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and centre secretary, organised the event. She devised a format with two group rounds, followed by a main final and a consolation final. Unlike professional competition, the emphasis was placed firmly on "fun and fair play." The goal was not to pressure newcomers, but to spread the spirit of sport while raising funds for the community. From a tactical analysis standpoint, the event provided almost no data to assess player ability. There were no service statistics, no point-winning percentages and no head-to-head records. That reflects the nature of a recreational and semi-competitive tournament, where participation matters more than performance. The event also shows how a local sports club can use community sessions as a springboard for fundraising. The £650 raised goes to Breast Cancer Now, while the collected bras will be recycled to support Against Breast Cancer. This story lies outside the ITTF or WTT circuit, but it reveals an important layer of global table tennis: sport connecting people for social causes. From a media perspective, this is a useful model for table tennis clubs in Vietnam. Instead of focusing solely on competitive results, a small centre can still make a difference by combining regular sessions with charitable activities. The collection of old bras, a rarely seen image in sports news, has become an inspirational hook encouraging women to talk openly about breast health.
